Why Coding During Library Classes?
All of our students in levels K-5 will be working on coding sometime in February or March and again in April or May. Levels K-1 have been coding using their own bodies with Let's Go Code, Levels 2-3 have used our little mouse Colby and the mazes in Code and Go to practice coding. Levels 4-5 have just started coding with our Dash robots to complete the Wonder League robotics challenges. All of these coding challenges push students to work collaboratively to solve problems. While coding itself is not part of the library curriculum, these coding challenges all hit on several library standards including AASL standards: 1.1.9.1 Work in teams to produce original work s or solve problems;
1.2.5 Demonstrate adaptability by changing the inquiry focus, questions, resources, or strategies when necessary to achieve success; 2.1.5 Collaborate with others to exchange ideas, develop new understandings, make decisions, and solve problems; and 3.2.2 Show social responsibility by participating actively with others in learning situations and by contributing questions and ideas during group discussions. Be sure to ask your child about coding during library classes to see what he or she is learning!
Parent Volunteers
We could really use some parent volunteers to help in the library. You can train on the job, so no experience is required! Please sign up online using the website listed or contact Mrs. Koch at akoch@shslou.org. March Sign Ups https://goo.gl/YpqbbB
